Video log or video for Internet (VLOG) has become a world craze and channels of all kinds have captured the fancy of millions of viewers worldwide. Of the thousands I have watched, many have very poor technical mastery, often using the excuse that their reality has a limitation to producing quality material…One of my very own Vimeo channels exactly falls in this very same category!
Granted, high standards are difficult to meet on tiny one room studios, the open seas, temporary sets or in far away vistas; yet many have reached that goal in producing quality content that matches anything one would find in main stream entertainment.
I myself have used and produced works with a varied spectrum of equipment starting at the very high end HD|4K digital ENG cameras all the way to the most common Phone 6s. Sound and editing follow the same path, and in all my productions, the best standards were always sought after, but always...where made secondary to the story that needed to be told.
In my earnest and humble opinion, the secret for keeping your viewers coming back, other than a solid story, requires mastering a few issues:
1. Offer an untold story or an unusual location on this rapidly shrinking planet…. or of course, a combination of both…making sure along the way that your images always supplement your ideas, not the other way around.
2. Produce quality technical work that wows your viewers in front of any display screen or TV, but never let the technical problems get in the way of the story, which should ALWAYS be the main goal of any film maker.
3. Keep your work simple so that less tech materiel and knowledge will be required.
4. Use time tested guidelines and stick to your story, because that is what people want to see, no matter your limited technical mastery, minimal or next to nothing budget!
